Royal Glaze Icing

This Royal Glaze Icing is by far my most favorite decorating icing to make. And I believe it works so well because of one simple trick. A tiny bit of Maple Syrup….Are you intrigued? If so, take a minute to read on about why I chose to use it.

I’m not writing this as a traditional recipe post because it is the week before Christmas and I am running out of time. But it’s so easy to make that I’m going to just list the ingredients below and all you will need to do is put them in a bowl and whisk them together.

Ready? Let’s get started.

Here’s what you need:

  • 1 1/2 cups + 2 tbps of Organic powdered sugar*
  • 1 tsp Pure maple syrup**
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 tbsp Coconut milk
  • pinch of salt (optional)

*Recently I made a huge discovery. I start to notice my organic powdered sugar made with tapioca starch instead of corn starch wasn’t drying. I thought it might have just been the brand, but when I bought my favorite 365 brand from Whole Foods and didn’t have any problems, in fact, my icing came out better than ever, I took a second look at the ingredients. They replaced the tapioca starch with organic corn starch.

As you can imagine because of my son and his issues with corn, I was pretty upset. But when I noticed he wasn’t reacting to the small amounts he was eating, I had to keep using it.

**The other change I made that I had seen used in other recipes for icing was that I replaced corn syrup with maple syrup. Not only did this enhance the flavor of the icing but it also gave the icing that nice sheen that you usually see in store bought cookies.

This Royal glaze icing holds together so well and really makes cookie decorating easy and fun!

So all you will do is measure then sift the powdered sugar (this is important), add the pinch of salt (optional), vanilla, maple syrup and coconut milk and whisk it all together until combined and smooth. The icing should be quite thick. You will want to test it with a fork.

To do so, take a fork and drizzle a little of the icing back in the bowl. If it’s the right consistency, there will be a ribbon of icing that will hold for a couple seconds and then disappear smoothly into the icing.

There is a little trial and error when making this kind of icing because consistency is everything. Even though I’ve given you exact measurements, if your icing is to thick add a tad of coconut milk and if its too thin, add a bit more powdered sugar.

I hope this icing helps you decorate your cookies this Christmas. It’s so delicious.
