I have now come to terms with the fact that we are making history. It’s definitely not fun and it is and will continue to have its challenges but none the less, we are indeed making history. This is my way of remembering our quarantine living
As I began to see the increasing number of photos on my phone of my children, their activities and our home schooling efforts I realized that I should also document this for my grandkids and their grandkids. Wouldn’t it be something for them to find a handwritten letter from me, someone they were related to during the COVID-19 pandemic.
When all of our freedoms have been taken away and we are do our best to flatten the curve by staying home. Schools, businesses, and so many other facilities and venues have had to shut their doors and have had to forego what cold have been 10’s of 1000’s of dollars.
Our lives will be changed forever.
We have now been ‘self-quarantined” for almost two weeks now under the “stay at home” order from the President of the United States. This is our effort to stay safe and help others stay safe as well. This is also our way of making sure that the people in need of beds in the hospitals are still allowed to have them because there will be room. Collectively we are trying to stop the spread of the Coronavirus.
People have been buying large amounts of food (and toilet paper) because these times are so uncertain. People are not working, places have closed and panic and anxiety are setting in. Grocery stores are unable to meet the current high demands and are selling out quickly. Delivery services have never worked so hard.
Our kids are home watching countless hours of tv or playing video games, FaceTiming friends and have this need to constantly be entertained. Well, at least my kids do, because I am still in toddler land with a 4 year old. They are now learning how to learn remotely and keep up with their schoolwork so that they can finish the year strong. The appreciation for teachers has never been higher. They are a gift from God.
Our sleep schedule is way off and joy comes and goes. We are all getting reacquainted with spending so much time together.
Social media continues to be a source of opinion and pressure. But it’s like we all have found this secret mom code because before homeschool actually began, everyone was running around figuring out Pinterest worthy things to do with their kids, but when the work loads came out and we all had to buckle down, it was like we were all on the same playing field again. All trying to figure it out together.
2 months later
I’m glad we have had this time to be home together and slow down. This summer is going to be long and challenging but my hope is that it can still be rewarding. With swimming pools closed and camps cancelled it will be a learning curve for all of us.
For us, we have been going on daily walks, listening to audiobooks, praying in our war room (watch the movie, it’s so good) and playing together. We have found new places to play in the house and rediscovered what it’s like not to have something to do all the time.
We are getting along better (for the most part) but we still have good and bad days.
Now that things are opening up we are going to see how things have changed both for the better and the worse. How schools will be different and our lives will be different.
I am happy to not go back to “the norm” but I am also happy to get some of our freedom back.
Wherever you are in this journey, I hope that you have been able to find one piece of joy in it and maybe even a silver lining. I would love to hear from you either here or in the group. Please feel free to share something about what this time has been like for you.
