Eating gluten free at Smashburger has become one of our very favorite places to eat out safely. Since we became gluten free I have made almost all of the food we eat. But it’s not for the reasons you might think.
Since my boys have more than just a gluten allergy, eating out has always been some what of a risk for us. However, recently we have been able try more and more things, which means more variety and much more fun!
Why Smashburger?
Good question? Because food allergies do not define us and eating “fast food” is something all kids should experience. These days it’s so typical for kids to eat out 2-3 times a week if not more. Our lives have become increasingly busy and preparing a home cooked meal has lost a lot of it’s importance. So sad but true.
There is also the fact that when my 7 year old has practically gone his whole life without eating fast food, a mom like me dreams of the day she can feed her child some fast food just to have a little break.
So it has become our weekly treat to go to Smashburger and enjoy a gluten free burger with fries.
What is gluten free at Smashburger?
The most important thing to know when you eat at Smashburger is that when you order, you must specify gluten free ALLERGY, not preference. I found it odd that they even ask this question and I am not quite sure what they would do different, but regardless, ALWAYS say allergy.
We were thrilled to find out that Smashburger has a dedicated fryer that fries nothing but french fries. This is something you should always pay attention too because many places fry their fries in a shared fryer with other things like chicken fingers, onion rings, tater tots and etc.
We order regular french fries as they are, plain with salt. I always bring my own gluten free ketchup because their’s is not gluten free.
We order a create your own plain smash. Since we are also dairy free, I order all of our burgers and buns without butter and after speaking with 2 different managers, I have been assured that these are made in separate, clean part of the grill.
Their gluten free buns are Udi’s brand. I order them grilled on the grill with no butter. This is a VERY IMPORTANT step in ordering your meal because if you do not request this, you run the risk of your bun being toasted in the toaster where all of the other buns are toasted. The bun doesn’t come out as soft on the grill but it is still very good. There is also a very distinct look to the bun so I always know that my bun is a gluten free bun.
Smashburger also has Coke products which are gluten free as well.
My Review
Eating gluten free at Smashburger is not only about the food. The managers and staff take great care in making us feel safe and welcome. They have hired and trained their personnel very well. A few of them either have allergies themselves, or they have someone in their family who has them.
We have eaten their more than a handful of times and have not experienced any problems. Thanks you Smashburger for putting a smile on my boy’s face and giving this mama a little break from the kitchen.
